Chapter Seven – A Saucy Sunday

Zelda rose early on Sunday morning, bordering on anxious and excited all in one. More than anything, she missed her puppy Diamond and needed to do a few things around the house before her family arrived. In the dining room, she spied china in the cabinetry but thought about running out to buy her own set for dinner. The apple green plates which matched the apple green kitchen would never do. It wasn’t as if her family was picky, but she wanted to make a good impression on their first visit to the new home she would share with Scott.

The plane touched down in Hebron at a little after eleven, giving Zelda plenty of time to get things in order.

“You seem so nervous,” Scott said. “Is everything okay?”

“No!” she said with her eyes wide. “I am getting married tomorrow. My family is arriving in a few hours, and whew, I just need to breathe.”

“What is your main concern?” he asked.

“I dunno, let’s see, have you met my Grandmother?” she said, scooping Diamond into her arms. Chandler had been thoughtful to bring the dog when he picked them up at the landing site on the Berger Estate. The town car rolled along on the gravel roads, past the church she would be married in at ten am tomorrow. She just had to get through tonight.

“All will be well,” Scott said, placing a warm hand on her thigh.

The landing site was ten miles East of the Berger family home. The three additional houses, connected by popsicle stick walkways, stood tall against the changing times in puppetry and ventriloquism. He watched the trees, which leaned against the onslaught of gusty winds that seemed to pick up more as they drove. Contemplating his prodigy, as well as his progeny, he didn’t see himself working thirty more years. By his calculations, and he didn’t require his pocket pal to do the math, he and Zelda needed to get started soon having a few Bergers.

Chandler remained quiet while he unloaded the luggage and placed it inside the back door of the kitchen. Zelda held Diamond in one hand and the wedding dress in the other. Her intention was to climb the stairs and put both away, but she stopped mid-stride in the kitchen. The horrific apple dappled green wallpaper was gone. The green curtains was no more, and the ugly green dishes which lined the cabinets had been replaced with white plates, saucers, and cups.

“Chandler,” she said looking at the tall dark man, “you did this?”

“No, madam. I hired a crew to handle the downstairs portion of the home,” he said. “The upstairs could use some refreshing as well, but we have time.”

“The downstairs! You mean the orange is gone?”

Chandler was nodding his head as Zelda took off running, dog and all. The first stop was the dining room. The ugly orange shag carpet was no more, but beautiful wood floods glistened with a high shine. The tangerine tinted walls appeared
